With its extraordinary performance pedigree,
the S38 is the ideal cruiser and club racer

Salona 38

Designing the yacht that would succeed the Salona 37 — our best-selling model and the 2007 Yacht of the Year in both Europe and the U.S. — was a daunting challenge, one that was answered with the S38. The most advanced techniques and latest technology were utilized to maximize sailing performance, above all maintaining the delicate balance between weight and stiffness.

Design

The S38 was designed by J&J Design and optimized by America’s Cup designer Jason Kerr. It was carefully crafted for use as a family cruiser, as well as for serious offshore and international racing. It can easily switch back and forth between family mode and racing mode by simply changing the sail inventory, and it excels in adverse weather.

Cockpit

The Salona 38 boasts the largest cockpit in its class. Free of obstacles, featuring an easily convertible open-to-closed transom and extensive use of carbon details (of which some are standard and some optional), this is where function is at its most elegant. The mainsheet track is recessed under the deck, but it also comes with the unique option of being easily transferred onto the coach roof so as to facilitate sailing with a large Bimini top completely covering the cockpit. A teak-faced transom bench offers sailing security and can be removed when racing or to provide water access at anchor. In the cockpit there are two spacious latches with an additional dedicated locker for two gas bottles. To achieve the perfect helming position during racing, an angled footrest, which is flush when not in use, was thoughtfully included in the design.

Construction and Safety

At the heart of all Salona yachts is the hallmark stainless steel frame that securely spreads the loads from the keel, shrouds and mast evenly throughout the hull, but the design on the new S38 goes a step further. Layers of carbon fiber have been added to carefully designated areas of the hull’s inner liner, resulting in maximum stiffness and durability and achieving equilibrium with the stainless steel structure.

Performance and Handling

A German mainsheet layout, a full-width traveler and tight headsail sheeting angles make short work of trimming. The smaller twin wheels improve steering, and changes to the sail trim are readily felt with even slight pressure variations on the helm.

"Salona produces a performance cruiser line with beautifully built yachts. The 38 was very nice to steer, very well balanced and certainly comfortable"

Dean Barker, Team New Zeland, Americas Cup.

Cabin Layout

The S38 has the kind of well-appointed interior that is expected of larger boats, offering plenty of natural light and ventilation. The cabin comes in three different layouts: two spacious private staterooms with one head, two private staterooms with two heads, or three private staterooms with one head. All layouts include an expansive navigation table and a functional galley.

"The steel frame makes the S38 exceedingly stiff, which leads to an exelent upwind  performance."
